Phone is Disconnected

by J Scott May 6, 2014

Verizon stopped by today to disconnect phone/Internet service and remove their equipment. From here, we need to a make a request to the county to physically remove the phone line that runs from the power pole to the house. Once that is completed (hopefully within the next week), that will be enough to get our […]

Water is Off

by J Scott May 5, 2014

The water company stopped by today to turn off the water and remove the water meter. We still need to get a plumber here to disconnect the water line (and the sewer line), but now we can get our demo letter from the water department. One step closer to demo…

Power is Gone!

by J Scott May 2, 2014

The local electric company came to the house today to disconnect the electric service. They disconnected the line from the pole, then cut the line at the house and hauled off the 100 length of line. For the first time, things are starting to feel real…we couldn’t move back in if we wanted to… 🙂

Movin’ Out…

by J Scott May 1, 2014

We moved out of the house today. We rented an apartment for six months a couple minutes away… It’s still at least 4-6 weeks before we demo, but in order to start demo, we need to disconnect the utilities, get letters from the various utility agencies giving their OK to demo, and we need to […]

Disconnect/Demo Letters

by J Scott April 30, 2014

In order to get the permit to demo our existing house, we need to have all of our utilities disconnected, water/electrical meters removed and we have to get approvals from various county agencies (historical preservation, well/septic, etc). I spent much of this morning calling to schedule all the disconnects. Here’s where things stand: Water/Sewer: Water […]

Flow Test Results

by J Scott April 29, 2014

Last week, I called to have the county schedule and perform a flow test to determine our water pressure at the street — this will determine the equipment necessary to install the required fire sprinkler systems in the new house. Normally, we’d be waiting a month for the results, but there’s a new house being […]

The Permit Process

by J Scott April 28, 2014

We’re quickly approaching when we should be submitting for all of our permits, so I wanted to spend a post discussing what that process is like, as it can get a bit confusing. While every jurisdiction is different, this is the way things work in my county (Howard County, MD)… Ultimately, three permits will be […]

SDP Submitted for Signatures

by J Scott April 26, 2014

As I mentioned yesterday, the mylars (physical version) of our Site Development Plan were ready to be submitted to the county for signatures. They were submitted today, and hopefully we’ll have signed off within the next week or two, at which point we can submit for permits.

Covenants Completed

by J Scott April 24, 2014

As I mentioned a couple weeks ago, our Environmental Concept Plan (ECP) and Site Development Plan (SDP) have been conditionally approved and the county was preparing our covenants. Today, the covenants were completed, we signed everything, paid our fee (there’s always a fee :), and now the county will be passing around the document for […]

Water Flow Testing

by J Scott April 21, 2014

Per code, we have to install sprinklers in our new house (and I really hate that). The work is done by contractors specially licensed by the state Fire Marshall (not just any plumber can do it), and in order for sprinkler contractors to determine how to design/install the system, they need to know what the […]

Electrical Bid: P Electric Services

by J Scott April 14, 2014

I got the name of a master electrician from a trusted builder friend of mine a couple months ago, and now that we have our electrical plan in order, I gave him a call and discussed the project with him. He asked me to send him the architectural drawings and the electrical plan, and within […]
